Abstract
Oil palm is the world’s first vegetable oil plant and as the population continues to increase, the demand for vegetable oil is drastically increasing. The aim of this work is a review the sustainable agriculture management practices of Oil Palm Production for the company; Golden Veroleum Liberia (GVL) Oil Palm Plantation in rural Liberia. The social aspect of sustainable oil palm production has not thoroughly been investigated by researchers as compared to the economic and environmental damage caused by industry and the gap requires serious attention as the waste generation and management, wellbeing of community involved, human rights and land right violation are key concerns and need emphasis. Golden Veroleum Liberia is the largest oil pam production concession company in Liberia operating in the southeastern counties and its sustainable agriculture practices is a serious concern. The company oil palm plantation operations have fixed series of criticism from both community and civil society, youth groups which had led to the Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) placing a stop order on the concession cultivation and expansion many series of occasion. This review highlights the importance of assessing the sustainable practices in oil palm production, focusing on Golden Verolem Liberia and addressing stakeholder concerns, promoting equitable land use and consolidating knowledge for improved policies are crucial for GVL’s long-term aims viability. Fostering sustainable practices, this review aims to support GVL in balancing economic growth with environmental and social responsibilities while serving as a model for the oil palm industry in Liberia.
